Ocean Waves in a Bottle

I thought this would be a fun little craft/activity/experiment for Lorelai to do to mimic ocean waves. We actually made this once before, before LCL was around, but she was really too young to understand or even care about it. She LOVED it today! She learned about how oil and water don’t mix, and then we flipped the bottle onto its side and made ‘ocean waves’ by gently tilting it from side to side.

The process
Ocean Waves in a Bottle

What We Used:

  • 1 Bottle of Water, filled 60% of the way with water.
  • Blue food coloring
  • Glitter
  • Baby Oil
  • Superglue (optional)

Directions: To the water bottle, add the ingredients in this order: blue food coloring, glitter, baby oil. Using super glue, glue down the top so little fingers can’t pry it open and make a mess! So easy!

NOTE: Baby oil definitely works best here. The last time I did it, I tried with vegetable oil but the oil was too yellow and… oily. The clear baby oil works perfectly!
