Groundhog Day Craft & Activity

February 1, 2011 by Kimberly 2 Comments

Since tomorrow is Groundhog Day, I decided to do a craft and activity with Lorelai to acknowledge it. Not a big deal, this holiday, but it was always fun as a kid for me and I want to pass that on. We went with a groundhog headband for the craft and a shadow outline for the activity.

Also, not a huge fan of groundhogs. My dad is a caretaker on a farm and we grew up despising the little pests. Can’t say they aren’t cute, though! LOL!

Gluing down the groundhog’s face

Groundhog headband finished, if still a little wet. Don’t mind her stinker face, lol.

Isn’t he cute? He came out a lot cuter than I anticipated and Lorelai keeps calling him ‘Hoggy’. I think the headband will be around for a bit! It’s super easy to make, too.

Materials We Used:

  • 1 piece of Cardstock
  • 2 Googly Eyes
  • 1 piece of {scrap} black Construction Paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors

Directions: Cut two {long} strips out of the cardstock, about 1-2″ wide. Tape together to fit your child’s head. (Do I really have to explain this? LOL!) Paint. Let paint dry, then glue on the face. The face was cut from the leftover white cardstock. You might or might not have to use another piece, depending on how big you actually want the face. For the teeth, I just cut two little strips from the cardstock, then glued. The nose is an oval from the black construction paper, glued on. 2 medium googly eyes were glued on last, and then the whole head was glued onto the headband. See? Easy peasy!

While the pieces were drying, I set up the activity. I just took a few feet of easel paper and taped it to the wall. If you look at the bottom right hand side of the first [left] picture, you can see the flashlight set up. It was being held up by a pair of jeans and a Dr. Seuss board book. It worked! You can also kind of see her shadow on the paper.

Let me tell you, this isn’t exactly easy when you have a child moving back and forth. She was trying her hardest to stay still but I guess that’s a really, really tall order for a 3-year-old, LOL! I quickly outlined her shadow. It’s not perfect,  very sketchy, but it is what it is. She was happy with it. 🙂

Learning about shadows & finished sketch. Hard to do with a moving kid!

Dexter, our cat, came over and Lore wanted to do his shadow too. It’s crap. He was moving around so I started out trying to do it and ended up just drawing a cat. She was stoaked to have his shadow right next to hers! Ha!

After that, I gave her crayons and let her color. I might do an update picture later once she’s finished. So far, it’s pretty cool! 🙂

Happy about how cute her profile sketch looks, lol! She colored it after.

So that’s it… my (our) nod to Groundhogs Day. I for one am hoping it stays cool for a while longer. I love spring weather, but spring in Houston lasts about 3 weeks before it just gets downright hot. Bleh!
