Pine Cone Turkey Craft

Pine Cone Turkey Craft

We are on a crafting kick this weekend – I’m loving it! Lorelai was walking around in circles this afternoon so I offered up another turkey craft and she jumped all over it. She scavenged this pine cone a few weekends ago and it has been sitting on our kitchen table since then. I decided that it would be perfect to use as a turkey’s body and it did turn out pretty cute. Lorelai loved adding the colorful feathers.

What You Will Need:

  • 1 Pine Cone
  • 2 Googly Eyes
  • Pieces of Scrap construction paper (red and orange)
  • Feathers
  • Glue

Directions:

  1. Start with the face first. This was hands down the most challenging part, and is definitely something Mommy or Daddy (or Grandma!) has to do. If you have a hot glue gun, USE THAT! I’m out of glue sticks so I used regular elmers glue. It worked, but it was a pain at first.
  2. Okay, so start by laying your pine cone down on its side, so the top is pointing towards you. Glue your googly eyes onto the tip of one of the shorter top pine cones. This is tricky, but take your time and BREATH. (I had to keep telling myself that!)
  3. Immediately glue on the beak and the beard. Sit upright to and allow to dry for 30 or so minutes.
  4. Once dry, glue on the feathers to the back part of the turkey (the bottom of the pine cone).
  5. Voila! You have yourself a simple pine cone turkey.

I learned this putting the face on the flat bottom of the pine cone. gluing eyes, etc was much easier. The feathers were tucked in (glued if necessary) a few rows up from the point of the pine cone. Still looked much like this one.

Very cute! I will try this with my scouts…very “cost effective” craft for them. Troop leaders are always looking for ways to save a buck and still keep the girls happy. Young troops love crafts, but the cost of supplies can add up.
