Bubble Paint “Blowfish” Craft

Bubble Paint Blowfish
Blowing the paint bubbles & popping them with the plate to create a cool effect.

Ah, the classic fish craft. If you’ve ever gone looking for a fish craft, you have probably come across this one a million times. I decided to spruce this one up with a fun painting technique called bubble painting. This technique is one I’ve also come across a lot lately, with varying instructions. My favorite post ~ this one with bubble painted greeting cards!

Materials for the paint:

  • Glass, cup or bowl for the paint
  • Water (about 1/2 a cup)
  • A squirt of dish soap (we use Dawn – any will work)
  • Tempera paint
  • Straw

Materials for the fish:

  • 2 paper plates
  • Googly eyes
  • Marker (for mouth/fins)
  • Glue
  • Scissors (to cut out back fin)

Directions:
Add water, a squirt of dish soap, and a big squirt of tempera paint and mix well together inside of the cup. Test out on a piece of paper by blowing the bubbles up as you would milk and pressing the paper to it to pop the bubbles. There should be a bubble print left behind. If it’s too light, add more paint and remix until the color is to your liking. It’s pretty much trial and error at this point. You can have a soft bubble pattern by using a little bit of paint, or a bold pattern with a good amount of paint. Your pick.

For the back fin of the fish, cut a triangle out of one of the paper plates. Do the bubble printing technique on both the body of the fish and the back fin. Allow to dry, then glue on the eyes and back fin. We ran out of the large googly eyes and the medium eyes are way too small. Lorelai dubbed her fish a blowfish, hence the “‘s in the title. 🙂

Tip: Put down a flattened cardboard box or several layers of newspaper first. Or better yet, do this one outside. Lorelai was seriously excited over the bubbles and they went everywhere.
