Easy Homemade Paint Recipe

August 29, 2012 by Kimberly 8 Comments

I recently got it in my head to make some homemade paint with Lorelai. So I googled and googled and finally came across this one. It appealed to me immediately because of the short ingredient list, basic supplies that I definitely have on hand, and the simple instructions. Score! Lorelai was cautiously excited about making paint, but she found it to be very fun. She helped me measure out and add all of the ingredients. Her favorite part of the process was when we got to mix in the food coloring.

Easy Homemade Paint Recipe

Add flour & dish soap

Add water & STIR!

Pour into jars & add the food coloring

Before mixing

The paint works like a charm!

Time for blue!

For the Paint:

  • 1 Cup of Water
  • 1 Cup of Liquid Dish Soap
  • 1 Cup of All Purpose Flour
  • Food Coloring

Other Stuff You’ll Need:

  • Bowl & Spoon to mix the ingredients in/with
  • 1cup Measuring Cup
  • Paintbrushes
  • Jars or containers to store the paint

Directions:

Mix the water, dish soap, and flour together in a bowl. Pour into individual jars. Add food coloring. Use paintbrushes to mix the food coloring into the paint mixture. Enjoy!!!

Note, the mixture might be a little bubbly, depending on your dish soap. It will settle eventually. The mixture does thicken with time, so use within a couple of days.

How “washable” would you say this is?

Food coloring stains, so this paint will, too. If you use liquid watercolors instead of food colors, it will be much more washable. =)

But, can you use this as an outside paint for lawn decorations without it running off.? Or washing away? Has it been tested for outside long term use?Like the permanance of it? 🙂
