African Elephant Printable Craft

cft-080I’m happy to announce that this is the last animal in our Endangered Animals unit. I will be doing a round-up of all the crafts tomorrow! While the African elephant isn’t endangered, they are a threatened species. I thought they would be a great addition to this unit! Originally, I was just going to use the elephant craft we had already made ages ago, but it was too cartoon-y for this project. The handprint elephant & the circus elephant didn’t fit right, either. So I designed a more realistic African Elephant craft and Lore had fun painting him. Print below and enjoy!

Facts About African Elephants

  • African elephants are the largest land mammal on earth.
  • They like to eat roots, grasses, fruit, and bark.
  • An African Elephant can live to be 70 years-old in the wild.
  • They can weigh anywhere from 5,000 – 14,000 pounds.
  • Their ears radiate heat to help keep them cool. When that isn’t enough to combat the hot African heat, they shower themselves by sucking water into their trunks and spraying it all over themselves.
  • Elephants use their trunks for smelling, trumpeting, drinking, breathing, and grabbing things. Their trunks have 100,000 different muscles!
  • Male and female African elephants have tusks they use to dig for food and water. Males also use them to battle one another
  • Humans have hunted and killed many elephants for their tusks. The trade is now illegal but that has not completely eliminated the threat. The population of African elephants is still threatened.
