Learning Activities & Printables

We made another trip to a teacher supply store nearby this morning. I’ve been wanting to get a few new things to help get me motivated again on the homeschool-preschool front. We came home with some nice loot! Sight Words Flash Cards, Rhyming Cards, Translucent “Counters”, a small clock, and dice (for math/addition activities).

Lorelai has been really into learning to read, words, and their beginning sounds. Starfall has an awesome “Learn to Read” section that Lorelai has had a lot of fun with. I’m all about learning to read with phonics (as opposed to JUST memorization) and it’s something we’ve been practicing (not too strictly) for a while. For instance, in the car today I was throwing out random words (cat, panda, sign, car, airplane) and she was telling me the first letter of each word. She would go, “Cat. Cuh-Cuh-Cuh… C!” and so on. It’s only a matter of time before she can read any word put in front of her! I can’t wait. 🙂

We have also been working on addition and subtraction. I might have mentioned this before, not sure. I taught her how to use her fingers to count. She’ll stick up a few on one hand, then a few on the other hand and tell me, “Three plus three is six!” after she counts all of the fingers that are up. (She touches each finger to her nose.)

I made a few printables (below) for sorting words that start with the same letter, and patterns. Unfortunately, my printer is out of ink and I can’t print the pattern one. Let me know if there are any problems!

Lorelai really enjoyed the rhyming/match activity. It came with a lot of pairs, but I think next time I’m going to make three separate sections so that it isn’t too much. She was having trouble finding the matches because there were just too many cards laying around.

These cards are really great. Thick enough so they won’t tear if she gets ahold of them, and they come with two little rings to hold them all together. I was planning on making my own flash cards, but now I don’t have to! 🙂

This activity is really simple. Lorelai had no trouble with it. We used the translucent chips that I bought today, but coloring works just fine. I had no idea what to really name this activity, but I guess Letter sorting works! lol

As I mentioned above, I haven’t printed out the pattern worksheet yet. Please let me know if there are any issues with it!
