Homemade play dough has been on my to-do list for a while now, but I always forgot about it right after seeing it. Lorelai is a huge fan of the brightly colored playdoh that you can buy in stores, but I was tired of having it stick in the carpets which, as any mama knows, is a pain in the butt to get out.
A few weeks back, I saw a post on Natural Mommie that shared a recipe for homemade play doh. Then yesterday I popped in to Nadia’s site, Fun With Mama, and saw her koolaid play dough post. Inspired by both posts, I decided to go in search of a recipe that included ingredients I had on hand. I found this one at Simply Moms. There are a TON of play dough recipes there so check them out!
This recipe really reminded me of the salt dough ornaments we made at Christmastime. The ingredients, while different proportions, create a very similar texture. Lorelai did a handprint in the play doh and it reminded me of the ornaments. What a great present for Grandma! We’re going to do another “salt dough” craft this coming week.
Ingredients to start:
- 1 cup of flour
- 1/2 cup of salt
- 1/2 cup of water
- food coloring gels (optional – we didn’t use)
Mix ingredients together with hands until you get the texture you want. Mine was super sticky at first but I kept adding flour until it was pliable.
